CROSSROADS, my new post-apocalypse script, has been finished and is being reviewed by my trusty first readers. Will wait a while to post the script (e-mail me if you want a review copy), but I’ll throw out a potential logline for now:
Sharky is a trader with a dark past. Lucia has heard of a boat that can take her and her children back to England. On the run from murderous cannibals, they’ll travel across the devastated ruins of America searching for redemption and a better life. Neither of them, though, will be prepared for what awaits them at the CROSSROADS.
I love the post-apoc genre. Always have. I remember watching THE DAY AFTER on TV, I fell in love with VIRUS (1981) in grade school and still consider it one of the best in the genre. I’m still hoping for a final MAD MAX movie. One of my favorite books is “THE STAND”. It goes on and on…
What I tried to do with CROSSROADS is create the type of film I would enjoy watching. While I have a literary boner for THE ROAD (both the book and movie), I didn’t want to get that dark. The world of CROSSROADS is certainly a dangerous, malevolent entity, of that you can be sure. But I wanted some humor, some over-the-top fights, and clear delineation between the forces of ‘good’ and ‘evil’. I wanted a hero that you can root for, and that ultimately saves the day.
I think I succeeded.
Of possible interest:
When writing, I almost always have an actor or actress in mind for the major roles. I don’t always consciously choose who that person will be, the image just forms. In this case, I was envisioning TRUE BLOOD star Sam Trammel (‘Sam Merlotte’) in the role of Sharky. For Gus, I again wrote a role for Tony Cox. I am bound and determined to work with Mr. Cox someday, and those of you who read my horror-comedy LA PETITE MORT will recognize this Gus as one in the same with that Gus (well, in LPM he’s a cook, here he’s a trader/mechanic).
I suppose that’s all I have to rap at ya about for now. I enjoyed the hell out of writing CROSSROADS and hope it gets exposed to a wider audience. For those of you who do read it, I would love to know who you were thinking of in the role of Lucia. Of course my dream would be for it to go to Amanda Seyfried or Natalie Portman!
